Rural considerations in the development of a National Public Health System

When:  May 17, 2022 from 02:00 PM to 03:30 PM (ET)
Associated with  Public Health

Good Morning NRHA Public Health CG Members,

You are being asked to participate in a conversation related to rural considerations in the development of a National Public Health System. The
Commonwealth Fund Commission on a National Public Health System is working on a very short (e.g., 90-day) timeframe to articulate a vision for a "national public health system" and issue a final report by late May/early June that would include a set of concrete policy recommendations. By a national public health system, the Commission means the authorities, resources, and structures at all levels to improve health and equity every day and to enhance preparedness for future crises. Importantly, the Commission is nonpartisan, and this effort is not an after action on the nation's COVID-19 response. The Commission is also working from the current federalism framework -- that the federal government cannot and should not dictate how public health is organized at the state, local, tribal, and territorial levels.

The Commission is particularly interested in gaining perspective on how the national public health system can improve the health of rural communities.  As NRHA Public Health CG members, we wanted to bring you into the conversation.  Please join us for a conversation on 2pm-3:30pm ET on Tuesday, 5/17

An effective system will require the federal government to provide leadership to guide the modernization of public health, so that every American, regardless of where they live, is protected -- a principle of the utmost importance to rural communities. Central elements of a national public health system include: the federal government's structure, authorities, and resources to lead a national public health system; the federal government's partnership with states, localities, tribes, and territories to support local delivery of public health services; the federal government's leadership in encouraging close collaboration between the public health and health care sectors; and the federal government's role in rebuilding trust of the community (inclusive of community engagement, improved communications, and support of multi-sector partnerships).

Appreciate the consideration!

Thanks,

Carrie
