The Shadow Side of Electronic Health Records (EHR)

Much has been written and said about the magic of the EHR and how it will "transform" the delivery of healthcare in the USA. Admittedly, I have a strong bias in favor of the powers of technology and its application to process improvement. I've been ruminating for some time now on the "shadow" side of the current EHR buzz. This morning, I saw the op-ed piece in the New York Times by a Columbia University Professor of Pediatrics, that summarized some of the concerns we should all share as we move full speed ahead into the digitalization of American healthcare. I can't recall how or when, but I saw that article too and thought it was excellent. In another life, having been a primary care practitioner in Australia a long time ago, I looked at my patients as they recounted their history, and particularly in relation to kids to see if he or she 'looked sick'. When I now go to my primary care practitioner, who is an excellent doctor, I wish he would look at me when I or he is talking rather than his computer screen.
